Chlorambucil is the primary active pharmaceutical component found in Celkeran. It is classified as an alkylating chemotherapy drug. This medication is utilized in cancer treatment, particularly for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Its mechanism involves inhibiting the growth and proliferation of cancer cells within the body.

Celkeran treats various types of cancer and other health issues, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, breast, ovarian & testicular cancer, Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia, thrombocythemia, and choriocarcinoma. It can be prescribed to both adults and children.

Celkeran contains Chlorambucil, which falls under a category of drugs known as cytotoxic agents, also referred to as chemotherapy. In the context of cancer, specific cells in the body proliferate excessively. Chemotherapy agents like chlorambucil function by inhibiting the growth and division of these cells, effectively reducing the production of cancer cells in the body and aiding in cancer treatment.

Avoid using this medication if you: are allergic to the active ingredient Chlorambucil or any other component of Celkeran; are pregnant or intend to become pregnant soon; or are breastfeeding.

Inform your doctor if you: have recently undergone radiotherapy or chemotherapy; suffer from nephrotic syndrome, a kidney issue; have epilepsy, seizures, or any psychiatric disorder; or have any liver or kidney problems.

The dosage is determined by your age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. Consequently, your doctor will establish the appropriate dose. Always take the medication exactly as prescribed. Never replace one 2 mg tablet with two 1 mg tablets.

Celkeran is typically advised to be taken daily on an empty stomach. The tablet should be swallowed with a full glass of water. Adhere to your doctor's instructions regarding Celkeran dosing. Do not break or chew the tablet. Continue taking the medication until the prescribed course is completed. Do not adjust the dosage or discontinue usage even if you feel an improvement. In case of an overdose, seek emergency medical help or contact your doctor at once. If you forget a dose of Celkeran, take it as soon as you recall it. However, if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Taking multiple doses too close together can lead to excessive medication in your system, which can be harmful.

Common side effects of the medication include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, and rashes.

If any of these effects persist for an extended period or worsen, seek immediate medical advice. Rarely, Celkeran may lead to severe side effects such as jaundice, seizures, reduced white blood cell and platelet counts, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, rapid heart rate, difficulties in concentration, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.

Do not share Celkeran with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms. Avoid using Celkeran for any other conditions without consulting your physician. If you still feel unwell after completing the prescribed course, contact your doctor without delay. Store Celkeran at room temperature and do not freeze the medication.
